What is in a name?
This weekend at the grocery store I purchased something purely based on the name…I bought dragon fruit. Seriously, how cool does dragon fruit sound? Plus it has this fantastic rind that looks almost prehistoric. When you cut into the rind the inner flesh is magenta with tiny black seeds. The flavor is similar to kiwi with a more creamy texture. You would expect something with such a jazzy cover to be bolder in flavor but it has this understated sweetness to it. It is lovely.
The only issue with purchasing the dragon fruit was I had absolutely no idea what to do with it. I have to admit my go to food with fruits I have no idea what to do with is to make cocktails. So…
Dragon Fruit Fizz:
1 Dragon Fruit
1 1/4 oz agave nectar
1 oz lemon juice
4 oz gin (or vodka)
dash of bitters
Soda water
Makes 4 cocktails
Muddle the dragon fruit with the agave nectar and lemon juice. Strain the pulp and seeds out. Add the gin and bitters to the dragon fruit juice and shake with ice.
Strain out the ice and pour into cocktail glasses. Top with soda water and garnish with a bit of lemon peel.
